British Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Nations
British Foreign Office has added an additional eleven more nations to its public alert list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted spirits.
This expanded advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only recently, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to multiple high-profile cases including the deadly demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.
While it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.
But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Authorities' Guidance for Tourists
Government representative a senior official said that each tourist should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"If something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's far more intense than usual or vision problems – get medical help fast."
