Doris Makes Ireland Team While McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man group, however Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".
After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with the two players poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for the captain if the captain does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
